Overview

SOSi is actively seeking qualified, professional, and experienced interpreters to provide on-site and video interpretation services for our New York City customer. Interpreters will support agency staff and providers in serving clients with limited English proficiency across all five boroughs.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide accurate, culturally appropriate, and confidential consecutive interpretation between English and the target language during client interviews, appointments, home visits, and events.
  • Support on-site and/or video interpretation assignments.
  • Support document translation between English and the target language as needed.
  • Adhere to DSS/HRA/DHS codes of conduct, HIPAA compliance standards, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Maintain professionalism and neutrality while preserving tone, meaning, and intent of all communications.
  • Arrive promptly for scheduled assignments and remain available for the full duration of the appointment or shift.

Minimum Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of verifiable experience providing interpretation services.
  • Demonstrated fluency in English and the target language, including the ability to interpret a wide range of registers, regionalisms, and cultural expressions.
  • Ability to conduct consecutive interpretation accurately and at an appropriate pace.
  • Familiarity with standards of professional conduct for interpreters, including confidentiality, impartiality, and professionalism.
  • Willingness to undergo certification/credential verification and skills assessment prior to assignment.
  • Preference for candidates who are registered or interested in registering in the New York City small business database.
  • Must be able to travel to locations across NYC’s five boroughs.
  • Must be willing to accept assignments on evenings, weekends, and holidays to support 24/7/365 coverage.

Work Environment

  • Assignments may occur in offices, shelters, IDNYC enrollment sites, or client homes.
  • Work may be in-person or via video platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or WhatsApp.
  • Flexible scheduling required; interpreters will be engaged as independent contractors and scheduled based on demand.
